Module 1: Fundamentals of Debate and Public Speaking

Objective: To introduce children to the world of debate and improve their confidence in speaking.

First Trimester:
  • Introduction to debate: What it is, why it matters, and types of debate
  • Speaking with clarity and confidence: Posture, diction, volume, and pace
  • Speech structure: Introduction, body, and conclusion
  • Basic argumentation: What is an argument? Evidence and reasoning
  • Refutation and counterarguments: How to respond to opponents
  • Improvisation and quick-thinking exercises

Final activity: Mini-debates on simple topics

Second Trimester:
  • Debate formats: Parliamentary, Karl Popper, Lincoln-Douglas, etc.
  • Persuasive language: Using metaphors, anecdotes, and rhetorical questions
  • Using data and reliable sources
  • Teamwork and debate roles
  • How to manage nerves and pressure during a debate
  • Strategies to persuade different types of audiences

Final activity: Team debates on current issues

Third Trimester:
  • Identifying logical fallacies
  • Analyzing famous speeches and historical debates
  • The role of body language in persuasion
  • Debates in different formats: 1 vs. 1, team debates, round-based debates
  • Adapting speech to the audience and context
  • Intensive practice with group feedback

Final activity: Internal debate tournament
